BBC threatened by Israeli govt. for showing its film: 'Israel's Secret Weapons',
about Israel's nuclear weapons and Mordechai Vanunu
In the last few days of June in a blatant move to suppress
the BBCs thoughtful and challenging film, 'Israel's Secret Weapon',
about Israel's weapons of mass destruction, shown on its World
Channel, Israel declared it was cutting off ties with the BBC.
Accusing the BBC of having anti-Israel policies bordering
on anti-Semitism, the Israeli authorities announced that their government offices
would cease to assist BBC producers and reporters, refusing interviews to the
British network; and that it would make it difficult for BBC employees to get
press cards and work visas in Israel, if the film continued to be shown.
We issued a press release deploring the attempts of the Israeli
Government to silence free democratic debate, by stopping the BBC from reshowing
its programme 'Israel's Secret Weapon' that covers the part Mordechai Vanunu played
in exposing their development, manufacture and stockpiling.
We accused Israel of trying once again to crush open debate,
as they did when they brutally kidnapped Vanunu in 1986 for telling the truth
about their secret arsenal of nuclear weapons, for which he was given an 18 year
sentence, 11 and a half of which was spent in solitary confinement.
We added our congratulations to the BBC for its defence of
open debate and for its stand against efforts to censor its revealing programme
made by the BBC2 Correspondent team. We also called on other groups and bodies
to support the BBC and for them to consider showing the film as widely as possible.
